How to Register Traffic Officer Trainee
To become a Traffic Officer Trainee , you need to be employed or appointed as a trainee (permanent or on contract) by a Provincial Department of Transport, a Municipality or a Government Agency such as the Road Traffic Management Corporation.
The minimum requirements to become a Traffic Officer Trainee are as follows:
• Minimum educational qualification of matric or grade 12 or equivalent.
• Code B driving licence (manual transmission).
• No Criminal record.
• Medical Certificate as proof that a person can do strenuous exercise.
• Applicants shall not be older than 35 years of age.
Traffic enforcement is one of the most important requirements to enhance road safety. For this, it is also important to have many dedicated and well-trained traffic officers.
But how do I become a traffic officer trainee ?
The RTMC has sent an e-mail to all provincial head offices of traffic and to the head offices of metro police so that people can have access to the application forms.

Traffic Officer Trainee Information:
Kindly note the following in regard to the training of Traffic Officers:
1. You first need to be employed/appointed, permanently or on contract as a trainee, by a Provincial Department of Transport or a Municipal Traffic Department. These Authorities normally advertise vacant posts in the Open Media.
You, therefore, need to check your local and national newspapers on a regular basis.
You may also contact any Local or Provincial Authority directly to inquire whether vacancies exist or when posts will be advertised, as well as to obtain any application forms.
2. The minimum requirements to become a Traffic Officer Trainee are:
• Grade 12 or equivalent (No specific subjects needed)
• No criminal record · Code B driving Licence (manual transmission)
• Medical Certificate – that a person may do strenuous exercises
• Applicants shall not be older than 35 years of age
• Must be employed by a Local or Provincial Authority.
NB: Only once you are employed/appointed as a Traffic Trainee will you be sent to one of the 14 Traffic Colleges by a Traffic Department only.
3. TRAFFIC OFFICER TRAINEE WARNING:
No private person can enrol directly at a Traffic College as a Trainee.
• Contact Traffic Departments directly for information on available trainee vacancies, application forms and opportunities for possible voluntary work.
• No one can reserve a “space” for you at a Traffic College.
• The training of Traffic Officers is funded by the state for selected candidates when posts are available.
• Do Not make an upfront payment to anyone.
• Be aware of bogus colleges, remember you can only be sent by a Traffic Department to a Traffic College, with NO middleman involved.
4. TRAFFIC OFFICER TRAINEE IN SUMMARY:
Basic Training for Traffic Officers in SA can ONLY BE DONE at a Traffic College through a Traffic Department as a TRAINEE. You should, therefore, start by contacting your local Traffic Department to find out if and when traineeships will be available.

Transition from the NQF level 4 Traffic Officer Qualification to NQF level 6 Traffic Officer Qualification
The current NQF level 4 Traffic Officer curriculum is being replaced by the NQF level 6 Traffic Officer curriculum which has been implemented in the last quarter of the 2018/19 Financial year. The Corporation will remain the only training provider for the NQF level 6 Traffic Officer qualification. However, Traffic Training centres have been registered as assessment centres for the qualification.
NQF level 4 Traffic Officer curriculum will still be offered at Traffic Training Centres, as the teach out period has been extended to December 2025. The last intake into this qualification will be January 2025. In other words, the last Traffic Officers to be trained on the old NQF level 4 Traffic Officer curriculum will graduate in December 2025.
